DESIGN AND PICTORIAL SOURCES

Pictorial design falls into four categories. The first could be a portrait, eg. King George IV. A reference of a contemporary painting by Thomas Lawrence may be used and the studio artist would try to make as good a copy as possible. The second might be heraldic, where accurate references are required but style is optional.

The third is an original design from another artist like the American Norman Rockwell, which would be adapted to suit the particular needs of the pub name. The fourth is a totally original design by the studio artist, such as the Merlin shown in this slide showcase.
