REFERENCES AND RESEARCH
A large library of books for reference was maintained at the studio, with additional filing cabinets of loose images constantly added to by the Brewery Artists staff. Accurate research of the pub name and/or premises was always the starting point for the work. Firstly by talking to the publican, secondly by using our own library and occasionally from outside sources.

The heraldic books were particularly extensive and expensive, but accuracy in all subjects was essential as the public were quick to point out errors. When the artist was satisfied with the research, it was discussed with the the chief artist who would pass it for production.
